The New Job Search Game - How to Crack the Code

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

Over 60% of job opening are not advertised. Do you know where to find them?

👎Are you spending 100% of your time searching for jobs on those popular job search websites? If so, you're missing out on over half of the job market!

Did you know that over 60% of job openings are NOT advertised on those popular job search websites?

It's often referred to as the hidden or unadvertised job market.

Many companies no longer post vacancies on those popular job search websites.

Other employers only post a small fraction of the opportunities available.

The majority post them elsewhere and you must know where to find them if you want to land that dream job or consulting gig. Sadly, most people don't. Source: (Glassdoor, Inc., Forbes, US News & World Reports).

There are thousands and thousands of amazing job openings right now that are NOT advertised on job search sites (many of which are a great fit for educators). But, most educators don't know where they are hidden.

The job search game has changed and is vastly different from our school systems.

Different does not mean it's difficult.

Educators can master this job search game by implementing a few easy-to-learn strategies.

✔️✔️HERE ARE A FEW TO GET YOU STARTED :

1) Diversify your job search strategy remember over 60% of jobs are NOT posted on those traditional job search sites.

So, less than half of your time should be spent searching those traditional job boards.

INSTEAD, allot no more than 40% of your time searching traditional job search websites.

When using those popular job search sites, think about setting up email alerts using keywords that align with career titles of interest, e.g., Professional Learning Facilitator, Curriculum Implementation Manager, Education Consultant, etc.,and have job openings for those careers sent directly to your email.

2) Add a few educator-friendly job search websites to your routine (those that also market to PreK-12 educators transitioning to new careers outside of the school system). Check out idealist.org

3) Which companies, organizations or consulting firms pique your interest?

Begin building your list or database to include those companies and organizations.

GO DIRECTLY to the company’s website and jobs boards.

Many companies post and manage their own job openings instead of posting them on those popular universal job search websites. It helps them control the process.

Most companies post new job openings on Tuesdays, others typically post them on Mondays through Wednesdays.

4) TIMING, TIMING, TIMING:

Applying at the RIGHT time of year,

the RIGHT days of the week and the

RIGHT time of day can increase your chances of getting an interview up to 85% according to industry experts.

Educators typically job search and apply during the holiday months and Summer months. This seems to make perfect sense right? Most educators can allot more time during those months. Guess which months are the WORST MONTHS of the year to apply for a new job (outside of the school system)? November, December, early January, June, July and August !!!!!!

THE BEST MONTHS TO APPLY AND PEAK HIRING SEASONS INCLUDE:

late January through May, September and October.

Now that you've cracked part of the code, it's time to start applying.

But WAIT; make sure that you have a WINNING RESUME. It can make or break your chances.

We can not use the same resume that was used in the school system to land an interview with leading employers outside of the school system.

It doesn't matter if you have a B.A., M.A., Ed.D or PhD. Your resume will need a makeover. Some touch ups, here and there.
