IS YOUR RESUME DESIGNED TO IMPRESS? Will it pass the test?

According to LinkedIn, Nearly 70% of resumes are rejected due to minor formatting errors, structure, length, the absence of key terminology, etc.

Our educator resumes and CVs are largely designed for use in academia and often do not align with other industries.

Whether you've earned a PhD, Ed.D., CAGS, M.Ed., MBA, or B.A., a resume that does not align with the private sector job market will often STOP your progress.

OR You'll often get stuck on those narrow and lower-paying career paths.

Have you ever found a job opening or consulting opportunity that was a great fit, and you were qualified, but you received that dreaded interview rejection email?

OR You applied, then waited, and waited and waited,

but never received a response?! GHOSTED!

Here are examples, key tips, and some critical do's and don'ts.

The following are resume excerpts only.

    The names are fictional.

Does your resume include a professional branding statement or does it contain a career objective statement?

If your resume passes the ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems), Hiring managers and human resources typically allot about 20 seconds—yes, yes seconds—to skim each resume to determine if they will read it further. They receive hundreds to thousands of resumes daily.

A professional branding statement in the top third of your resume can help you make a strong first impression.

The branding statement, made up of key phrases and bullet points, replaces the now obsolete Career Objective Statement.

In today's competitive job market, standing out from other applicants is also crucial.

    Some key take-a-ways
    1. Unless you're applying for a modeling career, refrain from using photos.

    2. Also, this resume format is often difficult for an Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to read/scan due to the formate and multiple graphics. Word format is often preferred, followed by PDFs.

    3. ATS technology is used by nearly 90% of leading employers and is the initial screener of resumes submitted by applicants.

    4. ATS resume bots scan and evaluate your resume based upon a set criteria to determine whether to accept or reject it. If your resume is approved by the ATS, it is then forwarded to human resource for review.

    5. The job experience descriptions are written in paragraph form.

A bullet point format to include short and succinct phrases is a best practice.

Some common errors made by transitioning educators:
    1. Resumes are over three pages long. The private industry standard is two to three pages.

    2. Career objective statements are becoming obsolete and are replaced with professional branding statements. Companies want to quickly ascertain what skills and experience that you bring to the table. Go back and refer to the resumes above. Refer to the top 1/3 of the two resume exemplars. Most transitioning educators' resumes are missing a career summary and a professional branding statement.

    3. Job descriptions are written in paragraph form or job description bullet points are underdeveloped and do not include enough quantitative data, i.e., results.

    4. Limited to no private industry terminology is incorporated.

Educators have a vast set of skills and talents that are highly marketable across multiple industries with the right resume.
Don't let your resume create a barrier between you and that new dream career or consulting opportunity!
