Winning Resume Makeover Tips for PreK-12 Educators Seeking Careers Beyond The Classrooms

    Updated: Mar 8, 2023

Crafting a righteous resume is essential for standing out from the competition and gaining that interview for your new dream job.

One crucial tip is to INCORPORATE DATA in the job description section of your resume .

Use facts and quantitative data to illustrate the results and impact you've made throughout your career.

    For example,

    • Candidate A writes in their resume: “a dedicated educator who is passionate about improving student performance.”

    • Candidate B writes, “increased student achievement by over 30% in Math and Reading for 5 consecutive years”

Which candidate piques your interest? Which will you interview if you had to select just one?

One candidate uses adjectives to describe an ability. The other uses facts and

    figures (quantitative data).

As you are revising your resume, put yourself in the position of the employer "Think Like a Hiring Manager."

If you were screening multiple applicants which candidate's resume would make the cut. Now apply that thinking as you modify your resume. 🙂

As a former Hiring Manager and advisor to multiple VPs of Human Resources know that data drives interviewing decisions as well.

It is NOT expected that you will increase student performance by 30% or more as referenced with Candidate B.

However, the use of facts and figures (quantitative and qualitative data) have a greater impact than the plethora of adjectives that we've all used to describe our experience.

    1. A passionate and dedicated educator with a wealth of experience known for improving

    student learning

    OR

    2. An accomplished educator with over 7 years of experience utilizing blended learning

methodologies resulting in an average student growth of 1.5 grade levels per year.

Job descriptions framed as the latter make a greater impact and will pique the employers interest.

    Here's another example:

    • Candidate C writes: trained fellow educators on effective strategies to increase parent engagement.

    • Candidate D writes: trained over 75 educators and support staff on effective home-to-school connection strategies for over 450 parents and caregivers resulting in a 40% increase in family engagement.

"Think Like A Hiring Manager", which candidate wins an interview with you?

    You get the picture.👍

For those of you seeking careers outside of the school systems, let's make a few more easy modifications by incorporating some private industry language in Candidate D's passage listed above.

Candidate D writes: trained over 75 educators (replace the word educators with

adult learners) and support staff (change support staff to cross-functional teams)

on effective home- to-school connection (change home-to-school to outreach)

strategies for over 450 parents and caregivers (replace parents and caregivers with

stakeholders) resulting in a 40% increase in family engagement (omit the word family).

Grab your resume, does it also include quantitative data? Now, every job description bullet does not require quantitative data. However, aim for data in a few job description bullets in EACH job title held.

    Citing: Range, frequency, $$$, %, scale, e.g.,

    • Trained over 1,000 staff members

    • Increased performance by xx% for 3 consecutive years

    • Managed a $2.5 million dollar budget ...
